Recently, I provided English-Japanese interpretation support for an international resident attending an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) clinic in Japan.
The patient, originally from Zimbabwe and currently living in Japan, had been experiencing recurring episodes of dizziness and imbalance. After visiting a medical facility and undergoing an MRI examination, no significant abnormalities were found. However, further evaluation by an ENT specialist was recommended.
During the appointment, I assisted with communication between the patient and the medical staff throughout the consultation and testing process.
Tests Performed
The clinic conducted several examinations, including:
- Hearing tests
- Balance and dizziness assessments
- Medical history review
- Physical examination
These tests helped the physician evaluate possible causes of the patient’s symptoms.
Possible Diagnosis: BPPV
Based on the examination results, the physician explained that the patient’s symptoms may be related to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), one of the most common causes of dizziness.
BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals inside the inner ear move into areas where they can interfere with normal balance signals. Symptoms are often triggered by changes in head position and may include:
- Sudden dizziness
- A spinning sensation (vertigo)
- Loss of balance
- Nausea
The physician explained the condition, treatment options, and follow-up recommendations, all of which were interpreted into English.
